UK Urges Supermarkets to Freeze Prices on Essentials Amid Inflation Pressure
The UK government is trying to convince major supermarkets to freeze prices of such essential products as milk and bread so that consumers can cope with inflation. At the same time, they are not planning to make such measures mandatory. In return for reduced prices, the Treasury proposed relaxing certain laws on packaging and health foods.
However, this measure has been met with great criticism from many industry executives, including the director of Marks & Spencer, who found it "preposterous" and "idiotic" as a solution to high prices. Instead, they suggested that the government should consider reducing taxes. While they will not be forced to reduce prices, the Chancellor is going to increase CMA's powers to name and shame any company taking advantage of the economic crisis by overpricing their products.
